Light flashes after cataract surgery

Light flashes and floaters after cataract surgery are common.

Floaters are threads or cobweb-like images that drift across your line of vision. Flashes are sparks of light that flicker across your sight. Both are usually harmless though they can be a warning sign of a complication in the eye.

A floater is a cluster of cells or a tiny fleck of protein located in the vitreous humor. This clear, stable gel, supports and fills the back of the eyeball. The light coming into the eye passes through the lens and the vitreous towards the retina, which are light-sensitive cells along the back of the eye. The retina is composed of several layers . The cells in the retina convert light into signals which are transported to the visual center part of the brain via the optic nerve.

A retinal detachment is when the retina pulls away from the layer underneath it (the Choroid) which provides nourishing for the retina.
A vitreous detachment is when the vitreous shrinks and separates from the retina.

After surgery, there is a slightly higher chance of retinal or vitreous detachment. Which might explain light flashes after cataract surgery.
Retinal detachment is an emergency situation, and you must seek care immediately.
If you experience light flashes after cataract surgery contact your ophthalmologist.
